Filmmaker
Mary Guzmán wrote and directed the feature film Desi's Looking for a New Girl, which was selected for the Rough Cut Series at the 2000 Independent Feature Film Market as well as winning Outstanding Emerging Talent Award OUTfest, 2001. The film premiered at the 2000 Frameline Film Festival, had its international premiere in Germany at the Berlin Lesbian Film Festival and is distributed by Waterbearer Films. An alumna of SFSU's film program, Guzmán has created numerous shorts, including Do the Math which is part of the Frameline Voices initiative to make LGBT films accessible to the general public and is the winner of the Audience Award at Boyle Heights Latina IFE 2009. Her films have screened in Spain, France, Australia, Indonesia and the U.S. Her newest short film The Wait was an official selection of Frameline Film Festival, 2011. She wrote the feature script Lost Dog which was a semifinalist in the Women's Work Screenplay Contest, finalist in the NewDraft Competition, and was selected for Latino Writer's Lab NALP. Currently she is creating a women's college basketball TV pilot, Starting Five.
